Madhurendra Kumar (born 5 September 1994) is an Indian sand artist, sculptor, leaf artist and social awareness campaigner from Bihar, India. He is known for creating large-scale sand sculptures, leaf carvings and socially themed artworks that highlight environmental conservation, world peace, cultural heritage, public health awareness and social issues.
Kumar has represented India at numerous international sand sculpture festivals and championships across Asia, Europe and North America. He is also recognized as an International Leaf Artist for his intricate leaf carving works.
Early life and background
Madhurendra Kumar was born on 5 September 1994 in Barwakala village near Bankatwa in the East Champaran district of Bihar, India. He was born into a financially disadvantaged farming family to Shiv Kumar Sah and Gena Devi.
His childhood was marked by economic hardship. To support his family and continue his education, he worked in various occupations including grazing goats, selling curd, weaving bamboo baskets, selling vegetables, painting signboards and undertaking manual labour.
According to family accounts, his artistic inclination was visible from an early age. His grandfather Ramchandra Sah reportedly encouraged his artistic interests after observing him create figures of birds and animals using clay and soil.
Education
Despite financial difficulties, Kumar pursued higher education in fine arts. He completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Sculpture from Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
His academic training contributed significantly to the development of his artistic skills in sculpture and visual arts.

Early artistic journey
Kumar began experimenting with sand art on the banks of the Aruna River during childhood. Due to limited access to traditional art materials, he used river sand as his primary medium.
During his college years, financial constraints reportedly forced him to spend extended periods in college corridors due to the inability to afford accommodation. Despite these challenges, he continued developing his artistic skills.
His work gained wider public attention after receiving appreciation from former President of India A. P. J. Abdul Kalam in 2012. Kumar has credited this recognition as a major source of encouragement in his artistic journey.
