Dr. Arun Kumar Singh (born 2 August 1970) is a seasoned Indian politician and member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), one of the major political parties in India. He currently serves as a Member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, representing the Baruraj Assembly constituency (Constituency No. 96) in Muzaffarpur district, Bihar. Dr. Singh is known for his grassroots leadership and commitment to public welfare.[1]
Early life and family
Dr. Arun Kumar Singh was born on 2 August 1970 in Baburban, a locality in Muzaffarpur district, Bihar. He was raised in a family with a strong political background and public service values.[2][3]
His father, the late Brij Kishor Singh, was a respected politician and former MLA from Baruraj, who served from 2010 to 2015. The political legacy of the family can be traced back to his grandfather, Yumna Singh, who actively participated in electoral politics beginning in 1967 as a candidate of the Socialist Party (India). After multiple electoral efforts, Yumna Singh won the assembly elections in 1980 as a member of the Indian National Congress, thereby establishing the family's political presence in the region.[4]
Following this, Brij Kishor Singh contested elections from 1995 onward, securing a major victory in 2005 and serving as an MLA until 2015. The family's continuous involvement in state politics significantly influenced Dr. Singh's path.[5]
Education
Dr. Singh is highly qualified academically. He holds a Doctorate (Ph.D.), as well as a Master of Arts (M.A.) and a Master of Business Administration (MBA). He obtained these degrees from Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University in Muzaffarpur. His academic background has contributed to his approach to policymaking and leadership, emphasizing both intellectual depth and administrative understanding.[6]
Political career
Dr. Arun Kumar Singh began his political journey in grassroots governance. From 2002 to 2007, he served as a Ward Parishad (Ward Member) in the Muzaffarpur municipal structure. During his tenure, he focused on development activities such as road repairs, sanitation, public health awareness, and education for underprivileged communities.
2015 Assembly Elections
In 2015, Dr. Singh contested the Bihar Legislative Assembly elections from the Baruraj Assembly constituency as a candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Despite a spirited campaign, he was narrowly defeated by Nand Kumar Rai of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) by a margin of 4,909 votes. This close contest reflected Dr. Singh’s growing popularity and support among voters.[7]
2020 Assembly Elections
In the 2020 Assembly elections, Dr. Singh once again contested from Baruraj and this time emerged victorious. He defeated the incumbent Nand Kumar Rai by a decisive margin of 43,654 votes. He received a total of 87,407 votes, which amounted to 51% of the total votes polled. His victory was considered a significant political turnaround in the region.
Financial and legal details
According to the affidavit filed with the Election Commission of India for the 2020 elections, Dr. Arun Kumar Singh declared total assets worth approximately ₹5.12 crore. These include both movable and immovable properties. He also declared liabilities amounting to around ₹39.27 lakh. His affidavit is available in the public domain and reflects financial transparency in compliance with election laws.[8][9][10]
