History

Mayo Clinic originated in 1864 when William Worrall Mayo established a private medical practice in Rochester, Minnesota. After the 1883 Rochester tornado, he collaborated with the Sisters of Saint Francis of Rochester, Minnesota to establish Saint Marys Hospital in 1889. His sons, William James Mayo and Charles Horace Mayo, expanded the practice, leading to the development of Mayo Clinic as a model for group practice in medicine.
