D. Rajkumar Wadiyar (born 23 March 1972) is an Indian sculptor known for his lifelike bronze and fibreglass sculptures. He represents the fourth generation of the Wadiyar family of sculptors from Andhra Pradesh and works in the Dakshinapatha (South Indian) sculptural tradition. His works include statues of political leaders, freedom fighters, cultural figures, and religious icons installed across India and abroad.
Early life and education
D. Rajkumar Wadiyar was born in Nattarameswaram village in West Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh. Born on the auspicious occasion of Sri Rama Navami, he grew up in a family deeply rooted in the sculptural arts.
His father, Acharya Shrinatha Ratna Shilpi Wadiyar, was a noted traditional sculptor, and his mother is Smt. Lakshmikantham. The family lineage traces back to Sri Basava Lingam Wadiyar, who established Wadiyar Fine Arts in 1908. The Wadiyar family is historically associated with Kothapeta in East Godavari district and is known for preserving the Dakshinapatha Shilpa tradition.
Wadiyar completed a Diploma in Fine Arts from a private university. He received traditional training under his father through the guru–shishya system. His studies included classical Indian treatises such as Shilpa Shastra, Sthapathi, Vastu Shastra, and Jyotisha, which continue to influence his artistic philosophy and practice.
Career
D. Rajkumar Wadiyar works with materials including bronze, fibreglass-reinforced polymer, concrete, plaster of Paris, and wax. He is particularly recognised for his emphasis on anatomical precision, realistic expression, and proportion. He describes his artistic approach as Jeeva Shilpa (living sculpture), focusing on lifelike representation.
Before undertaking a sculpture, he studies the subject’s life, personality, and historical context to ensure authenticity and emotional depth. His works include statues of deities, political leaders, freedom fighters, social reformers, and cultural icons. These sculptures have been installed in public spaces, universities, temples, and government institutions across India and overseas.
According to media reports, he has created over 500 bronze sculptures and more than 2,000 fibreglass works. He sculpted a statue of N. T. Rama Rao that was unveiled in Los Angeles by Union Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu.
