Research and scientific contributions

Ion channel research

Prof. Rajiv Dutta is best known for his research on pressure-sensitive ion channels in growing pollen tubes. His work, conducted in collaboration with Prof. K. R. Robinson, investigated mechanosensitive ion channels involved in tip growth and elongation processes in plant cells.

The research was published in:

  • Plant Physiology, Volume 135, Pages 1398–1406 (2004)

The findings were subsequently highlighted in:

  • Nature, Volume 430, Page 416 (Research Highlights)

The study demonstrated that pressure-sensitive ion channels generated electrical potential differences across pollen tube membranes and regulated membrane pressure at the growing tip.

The research further explained:

  • Oscillatory growth mechanisms
  • Differential growth rates
  • Membrane pressure regulation
  • Cell elongation processes
  • Tip-focused ionic currents

The work became significant in understanding mechanotransduction in biological systems and was later compared with discoveries related to mechanosensitive ion channels recognised by the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine awarded to Ardem Patapoutian and collaborators.

Biotechnology and molecular biology

Apart from ion channel biology, Prof. Dutta has contributed to several interdisciplinary scientific domains, including:

His academic publications and reviews have contributed to interdisciplinary scientific research involving biological engineering and molecular systems.
